Bulldogs Ride 4 Pins to Title; Face IR Weds at Home in State Tourney
The Laurel Bulldogs Wresting Team captured the program's 4th Southern Division Title in school history Friday night by defeating the Lake Forest Spartans 36-27.
Brennan Harrington (106), Stanley Pete (120), James Johnson (195) , and Matt Pusey (285) all scored pinfalls for the Bulldogs. Connor Smith (113), Kyler Weaver (132), Jett Furbush (170), and Travis Rife (182) all tallied decisions for Laurel.
"I took over this program when these seniors were freshmen," Laurel Head Coach Zack Toadvine shared. "We have had a lot of ups and downs over these four years, but it has finally all come together. I could not be prouder of the heart and grit they have shown. We are the Southern Division Champions! It's incredible! Next stop, the dual state tournament. Job's not done!"
The Bulldogs (#3 Seed) will face Indian River (#6 Seed) in the quarterfinals of the Division II State Tournament on Wednesday, February 9, at Laurel in Bill Pugh Gymnasium. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:00 pm. More information will be forthcoming about tickets, as that information has not been shared yet with schools.
If the Bulldogs are successful on Wednesday night, they will advance to the semi-finals of the team championships and will travel to Smyrna High on Saturday, February 12. Both the Semi-Finals and the Finals matches will occur on that same day, starting at 4 pm and 6 pm, respectively.
